Advanced spreadsheet techniques for analysis of data collected with EthoVision and The Observer

You will learn how data gathered with The Observer or EthoVision can be exported to Microsoft Excel and subsequently organized, analyzed and managed using a number of powerful features of Excel. Real datasets will be used to provide examples of how to get a good overview of your results and how to properly format data for further analysis with statistics software like SAS or SPSS.

  • the settings in EthoVision and The Observer that affect data export to and data management in Microsoft Excel
  • the use of 'AutoFilter' and 'Advanced Filter' to gain more insight into your data set
  • using 'Pivot Table' and 'Pivot Chart' reports to organize and visualize your data
  • how to apply formulas for additional data manipulation after importing
  • the use of 'Conditional Formatting' to gain clarity and to easily detect errors or anomalies
  • how to protect workbooks, worksheets and cells
  • the use of macros for repetitive commands
  • automatic vs. manual recalculation of worksheets

Users of EthoVision and The Observer (with basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel) who want to better organize, manage and analyze their data.

Presentation
Lecture and practical demonstration using real-life examples followed by questions and answers session.

Instructor resume
Wilant van Giessen received his Master's degree in Plant Pathology/Entomology at Wageningen University and has made extensive use of Microsoft Excel while doing his subsequent PhD research in Charleston, South Carolina (USA). This research involved keeping track of thousands of electrophysiological recordings, for which Excel proved to be invaluable. Since August 1999 Wilant heads the Southeast Regional office of Noldus Information Technology Inc., out of Asheville, North Carolina. Showing users how to apply Excel has been part of the more than 70 EthoVision and Observer training sessions he has organized.
